Ratings Tell the Real Story of Sarah Palin’s Series Debut

Whether you love or hate Sarah Palin’s politics you have to admit she knows how to rev up a crowd with her peculiar oratory incantations.  It’s her absurdity that fueled my curiosity to tune in Thurs. night and watch the debut of her new Fox News series Real American Stories. I was disappointed in the show and later learned others felt the same.

The show format didn’t highlight Sarah’s oratory strengths.  She was tethered to reading a scrip. Scripted,  Sarah couldn’t  be Sarah.   The show amounted to Sarah reading long passages as imagery of the interviewee flashed on the screen.  It lacked the energy and punch we’ve come to expect from Palin. Although we saw a kinder, gentler side of Sarah, she couldn’t resist a couple backhanded Democratic digs.   On the whole I was disappointed in the show.

Although disappointed I also felt sorry for Sarah.  It wasn’t that Sarah’s performance was poor.   Fox should have known better than to use her in this format.  Reading reviews of the show I noticed others shared  similar opinions.

Palin’s performance and the series debut still earned it the number one spot in the  cable news category in that time spot.  But, by Fox standards the show’s rating performance had to be disappointing.   Greta Van Susteren’s “On the Record” normally runs in this time slot. TVNewser notes that Palin’s special was down 10% in total viewers and 28% in the demo compared to Greta’s previous Thursday episode.

Sarah Palin Debuts New Fox Series on April Fools Day

Real American Stories to Debut on April Fools Day

The news broke yesterday afternoon that Sarah Palin will be hosting a new series on Fox News called Real American Stories. When I read the show would premiere April 1st, I wondered if the story was some kind of April Fools prank.

I was convinced the show was a joke when it was announced that guests on the debut episode included LL Cool J, Toby Keith of country music fame and Jack Welch the former CEO of General Electric.

Apparently I wasn’t the only person surprised when they heard about Palin’s new show and her star studded list of guests.  LL Cool J  used Twitter to give us his response last night.  He wrote, “Fox lifted an old interview I gave in 2008 to someone else & are misrepresenting to the public in order to promote Sarah Palins Show. WOW,”

WOW is right.  As is LL Cool J for calling out Fox’s pitiful attempt to recycle a 2 year old interview.  Toby Keith’s representative had a similar response.  We were never contacted by Fox,” his rep tells Hitfix.”I have no idea what interview it’s taken from. They’re promoting this like it’s a brand new interview. He never sat down with Sarah Palin.”

Fox has pulled LL Cool J from advertisements for Real American Stories and the interview from the show itself.  At this time Toby Keith’s segment is still set to air.

In light of these developments, I’ve decided Real American Stories is indeed an April Fools joke.   Fox is trying to fool us into believing their unauthorized use of recycled interviews is actually news.

Irony or Idiocy You Decide.

The irony of  hiring Sarah Palin to host a Discovery Planet TV series on Alaska was not lost on me.

Why would Discovery Communications hire an anti-environmentalist as an Alaskan  spokesperson ? Palin’s anti-environmental stand is well known.  She made front page news with her campaign slogan “Drill Baby Drill” which advocated new oil drilling in Alaska’s nature preserves.   Palin also sanctions the areil slaughter of wolves in her state (see  photo below) and has worked against increased protections for Cook Inlet beluga whales and America’s only polar bear population.

Having Sarah Palin host a show on the beauties of the Alaskan wildlife is as absurd as hiring me to replace Michael Steele as the head of the RNC. Neither of us is qualified for the job and for each of us the position would present a hypocrisy unjustified by either reason or rational thinking.

Click here to write David Zaslav President & CEO, Discovery Communications and tell him to drop Sarah Palin’s new show.  As the parent company of Animal Planet, The Discovery Channel and TLC, Discovery Communications delivers educational and entertaining family programming.  Palin’s dismal record on environmental issues is public record.  Publically denounce Discovery Channel’s disastrous decision to hire Sarah Palin as a spokesperson for Alaska’s wildlife and tell them to hire someone who is actually qualified for the job.

EXCLUSIVE (Update): Palin’s Tea Party Crib Notes

As long as Palin keeps wearing short skirts and manages her weight do you think her supporters really care if she wrote her talking points on her hand? Those that paid money to hear her peculiar style of prose knew they weren’t getting Einstein when they paid $500 a head to attend.

The Wild Wordsmith of Wasilla … Classic Dick Cavett

The Wild Wordsmith of Wasilla is well worth a w-read.  Referring to what Cavett calls “Sarah Swoon” and Mrs. Palin’s post 2008 / pre 2012 presidential campaigns, Cavett dubs Palin the ”serial syntax-killer from Wasilla High” .   Witty, well written and weighty reading.  Check it out …  The Wild Wordsmith of Wasilla
